10 reasons why confident men are more attractive
We all know the phrase, ‘Confidence is key,’ but what does this really mean?

BY KIM SILVERMAN
5TH JUNE 2017

1. You can handle any situation
Think about it, no matter what the world throws at you, knowing how to handle such scenarios at the spur of the moment requires confidence. No woman admires an awkward, mumbly man who curls up into a ball when things go pear-shaped – it’s nothing if not a huge turn-off. Showing that you can conquer a problem with quick thinking also suggests your intelligence and ability to resolve, like a gentleman.
2. You're a positive thinker
We don’t need to remind you of how many psychologists confirm that confident people are overall positive people. One of the best ways to show your confidence is of course with a smile – but don’t go smiling everywhere you go, women just find that creepy. And since our daily lives continuously throw us negative qualms, showing positivity and optimism even during the darkest of moments is certainly an attractive quality. Remember, there are a lot more positive than negative things in life to be reminded of.

3. You demonstrate strong team leadership
Similar to the above, having the ability to orchestrate a team with different personalities and ideas takes great confidence – and it’s probably one of the oldest traits that people have mastered to succeed. If you’re stuck in-between a bickering team meeting, have the confidence to create some order that everyone will want to follow. Of course, no one likes a dictator, so having the charm and charisma to be a leader comes as a part of the confidence package.
4. You build trust and friendships
People have a nose for suspicious individuals who generally don’t stand their ground or have no opinion. Which is why confident people on the other hand tend to have close friends, and the even luckier ones have many of them. Why? Because confident people share many qualities of extroverts as they tend to interact more with other people, share more jokes, plan social events and are generally more fun and interesting to be with.

5. You’re comfortable in your own skin
We’re not suggesting you go overboard and become Mr Vain, but confidence, as anyone will agree on, means you are comfortable in your own skin. Confident men will always stand upright with their chest out, and carry themselves in a way that suggests they are comfortable with their surroundings, asserting their confidence by making plenty of eye contact and a welcoming body language. Doing so goes a long way, whether it’s at an interview setting, a first encounter or meeting her father.
6. You're the best sign of defence
For decades, winners showed signs of confidence and bravery. The late Sir Winston Churchill for instance exuded an interesting example of confidence – his way with words and strong diction helped transcend his own confidence in winning the war to the British people. Because we don’t proclaim violence as a form of defence, having the authority and confidence in your own voice is a gateway signal to a good defender. Women have always found this particularly attractive too, as the natural instinct is to be with someone who can protect the family.

7. You're sexually more attractive
There’s no denying that confident men is something that women really want. When Gentleman’s Journal asked 10 women what they wanted in a man, it was evident on more than one occasion that confidence was seen as a sexually attractive trait. And they also said, “there’s no point being Mr Ego in the pub if you’re going to become all shy and self conscious behind closed doors“.
8. You'll get job offers and promotions
Your boss hired you because you showed some sign of confidence, but if you become too complacent, your boss will hate you, and the guy next to you who stuck with his confidence will snap up the promotion you were too busy dreaming of. So stop twiddling your thumbs, waiting for your boss to give you a gold sticker and start manifesting reasons why you should get that promotion. Hiding away in the office doing good, isn’t good enough.

9. Or, you'll simply start your own company
Some of the world’s richest and most famous business owners really did start from nothing. But what did they do that many others didn’t? They had the confidence abandon the life of working for someone else – optimists, who showed signs of leadership, building trust with peers and investors, and above all they had the guts and confidence to say “I will start my own business“.
10. You strike the balance between confidence and arrogance
There’s a very fine line between confidence and arrogance, and understandably it may be hard to know when you’ve swayed either way. Confident men are more observant than arrogant men (who tend to walk over others, thinking they have the charm and charisma when in fact they’re just making a downright fool of themselves). However, confidence sits with elegance – you stand up for your views, but you never impose them. No gentleman imposes their views, ever.

5 Outdated "Diet" Foods Nutritionists Want You to Stop Eating
FEBRUARY 20, 2017 DIET
 by AMANDA MONTELL

PHOTO: soparameninas.net
The 1990s were good in a lot of ways: brown lipstick, dark roots, etc. But the diet foods of 20 years ago leave something to be desired. It makes sense when you consider how much science has changed in the last two decades. As nutrition and weight loss research continues to progress, our definition of a "healthy" diet becomes closer and closer to the truth. Today, nutritionists tend to agree on what constitutes a healthy eater. As registered dietitian Jenny Champion puts it, healthy eaters "choose real food over anything processed, value the quality of food they eat, and have a healthy relationship with food without obsessing over it."
But foods that were considered nutritious and good for weight loss in the "heroine-chic" era subscribed to a completely different philosophy. Today, we're reflecting on the five worst diet foods of the 1990s—and recommending modern alternatives. Keep scrolling to see the most popular diet foods in 1997 compared to 2017.
1. Fat-free snacks and desserts1 / 5

PHOTO: Nabisco
"People were obsessed with fat-free in the 1990s for weight loss," says Daryl Gioffre, DC, celebrity nutritionist and founder of the Alkamind cleanse. But according to Gioffre, the fat-free craze was not rooted in science. In the late 1960s, three Harvard researchers were paid a large sum of money to publish a review on sugar, fat, and heart disease, featuring studies that were "handpicked by the sugar industry, which minimized the link between sugar and chronic disease, while fully placing the blame on fat," Gioffre says.
Subsequently, the market took notice and flooded consumers with fat-free foods; baked chips, no-fat butter, and fat-free desserts were especially popular. "The goal was to provide consumers with a 'healthy' alternative to sweets while still helping them achieve their weight loss goals," says licensed nutritionist Jaimi Jansen. But companies were simply replacing the fat with processed additives and extra sugar, particularly high-fructose corn syrup, which Gioffre says "is immediately turned to fat" and causes a "higher occurrence of chronic diseases like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity."
Today, nutritionists agree that healthy fats from sources like hemp seeds, chia seeds, flaxseeds, raw nut butter, coconut oil, and wild-caught salmon are essential to a nutritious diet. For healthier snack and dessert options, Jansen recommends "apples drizzled with chocolate and almond butter" or homemade kale chips that are "dehydrated at low temperatures for long hours instead of baked or fried at high temperatures, which alters the food and the oils they are cooked in."
2. Entrée salads2 / 5

PHOTO: Cheesecake Factory
Twenty-some years ago, restaurants began advertising big salads as "healthy" alternatives to traditional entrées, and many people still buy into this. "Classics from the '90s include the chicken Caesar salad, mandarin orange chicken salad, and cobb salad," Gioffre remembers. The problem is that most of these dinner salads are loaded with sugar and omega-6 fat, "the kind that causes inflammation and acidity in your blood," says Gioffre. Dressings, both full-fat and fat-free, contain highly inflammatory ingredients, like soybean oil and artificial sweeteners. Add with toppings like croutons, bacon, fried noodles, and cheese, the calorie count on these salads skyrockets.
Obviously, salads don't have to be unhealthy. "A better option is to go to the salad bar where you can choose healthy 'rainbow' ingredients such as beets, broccoli, asparagus, red bell pepper, cucumber, avocado, celery, and dark green leafy greens," says Gioffre. For dressing, reach for an apple cider–based vinaigrette, or lemon and extra-virgin olive oil. This is "the best option for optimum health and weight loss," Gioffre says.
3. Diet soda3 / 5

PHOTO: PepsiCo
As a '90s kid, my parents practically put Diet Coke in my baby bottle—but modern nutritionists are highly skeptical of artificially sweetened drinks. "Recent studies, while conflicting, have suggested that these artificial sweeteners are linked to weight gain," says physician nutrition specialist Adrienne Youdim, MD. The logic is that that these products trick our brains into thinking we have consumed real sugar. "This trickery may in fact promote the desire to consume sugar or drive cravings for sugar and in turn cause weight gain," Youdim explains.
If you're still recovering from your '90s diet soda addiction, Youdim recommends making your new signature drink sparkling water with a splash of cranberry juice. We're also big fans of LaCroix.
4. Veggie chips and pretzels4 / 5

PHOTO: Sensible Portions
In the '90s, we all seemed to be very confused about what constituted a "healthy" snack. A lack of education about ingredients had us thinking that fried, processed beets were healthier than potatoes and that if a snack tasted plain, it must not be that bad for you.
"This was one of my pet peeves in the 1990s," says registered dietitian Sandra Woodruff. "Pretzels were a daily snack for many people. ... 'What’s so healthy about white flour and salt?' I used to ask people in my weight control classes." Now most of us realize that pretzels have a high glycemic index, tons of sodium, and barely any nutrients.
Then there were all the veggie chips our moms used to buy instead of Lay's—remember those? "A fried chip is a fried chip," Youdim says. "The harmful ingredient is not the thing being fried but actually the saturated and trans fats used in the frying process, which are harmful to cardiovascular health."
Today, any nutritionist would recommend roasted nuts over these snacks from the '90s. "[Nuts] provide protein, fiber, and other nutrients; have a low glycemic load; and are linked to lower risk of diabetes, CVD, and other health problems," Woodruff says.
5. The Atkins diet5 / 5

PHOTO: Atkins
Our nutritionists agree that the Atkins diet, which everyone from your English teacher to your grandma was on in the '90s, is perhaps the worst diet of all time. According to Gioffre, "Protein in moderation is a healthy thing, but the Atkins diet took this too extreme." Atkins dieters were asked to completely eliminate carbs, including fruit, and encouraged to eat a high-protein, high-fat diet instead. "While a high-protein, low-carb diet can help for short-term weight loss, it does not show to have lasting results due to its highly restrictive nature," says Jansen.
According to Colette Heimowitz, vice president of nutrition and education at Atkins Nutritionals, Inc., the Atkins diet of today "is not an unlimited protein diet." Instead, it "stresses nutrient-dense carbohydrates as part of a balanced eating plan, provides a moderate amount of protein and good fats, while restricting those carbohydrates which have the greatest impact on blood sugar." As Heimowitz states, studies show that the results of low-carb diets are shown to last as long as two years.
But overall, 2017 diet experts support a "well-rounded diet—and yes, that includes healthy carbs," says Jansen. Leafy green vegetables, healthy fats, moderate protein, and small portions of non-processed carbs are all essential.

Not to knock our body's natural air conditioning system, but there's a serious downside to the sweat-prone summer months: Namely that as the mercury skyrockets, our face becomes a slip-n-slide that renders the time we spent putting on our makeup a complete waste. That's why stocking up on mattifying, longwear products is an absolute must this time of year—and that all starts with a reliable primer.
With the proper base, your makeup won’t budge—even in sauna-like conditions or after the most grueling SoulCycle class. Beyond that, the best primers also function as IRL Instagram filters, blurring imperfections, smoothing pores, and even offering a subtle glow. With all this in mind, we’ve rounded up the five best sweatproof primers on Amazon to withstand whatever this weekend throws at you—and we do mean this weekend, since they're all available with Prime's one-day shipping.

Illustrated Periodic Table Shows How Elements Are Part of Everyday Life
By Jessica Stewart on July 18, 2017

Anyone who ever sat through a high school chemistry class knows how frustrating it can be to tackle the periodic table. Created to give an order to chemical elements according to their atomic number, chemical properties, and electron configurations, the scheme has been in use since the mid-1800s. And now, the table has gotten an update to demonstrate how these elements apply to our daily lives.
Boeing software engineer Keith Enevoldsen created The Periodic Tables of Elements, in Pictures and Words to help break down the barrier between chemistry and everyday life. Don't understand why bromine or indium is useful? You'll find bromine in photo film, and indium is used to create LCD screen. Through simple pictures and direct descriptions, Enevoldsen reminds us of why these chemicals are useful. Never heard of europium? With a quick glance, you'll learn that this soft metal is responsible for helping us watch color TV.
All under the Creative Commons license, the periodic table, both with and without the written words, is available in a high-resolution printable version. The individual element cards, which come with easy instructions on how to print make great study tools or you can even order the tables as high-quality posters.
Enevoldsen continually updates the table, adding Nihonium, Moscovium, Tennessine, and Oganesson when they were officially named the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry in 2016.
The Periodic Table of Elements, in Pictures and Words breaks down chemical elements by their everyday uses and is available in myriad printed formats.

Most Important Things For A Man To Learn In Life
Five Crucial Life Lessons Every Man Needs To Learn ASAP

Andrei Cimbru

This article was initially published in the Quora thread, What are the five most important things for a man to learn in life?
I will be turning 25 soon.
Five years ago, I made a decision to surpass the bad condition I was in back then and to work hard to improve myself and my mind-set as much as possible.
I believe maturity is a subjective thing and it's based on the emotions and challenges you go through life. I've met 40-year-olds who were acting like 18-year-olds and 18-year-olds who enrolled in the army and possessed at 22 the self-discipline that others can only dream of.
Based on these thoughts, what you need to focus on the most is internal growth. Don't go adding unnecessary things around you. Instead, develop inner toughness.
Some of the helpful lessons I learned in my journey towards growth are:
1. Stop Complaining
Seriously! It's such a big waste of your daily energy — which is limited, by the way. Why use it all up on complaining about how your situation sucks? Whether you don't like your degree, your city, your job, your boss or any other condition you are in, complaining will do exactly zero towards improving your current state. Life doesn't owe you anything and we should never feel entitled to take it for granted. Furthermore, if you complain out loud, the people around you are going to get sick of it. You are gonna become the guy that bums everyone out and they will start avoiding you. Start doing something about the things that bother you. And if you are afraid of change, embrace it. Change is the only constant we have in this world. Either you lead the change or you get left behind. Follow Tim Ferriss's 21-Day No-Complaint Experiment and you will see that practicing this habit consistently will help you see life differently.

2. Talk To Her
The girl who has been sitting alone at the bar for 20 minutes might just want to talk to you. Even if she hasn't made eye contact with you. She is out alone on a Friday night because she hopes to meet an interesting guy. I feel that today there is a trend among young men that is wrong. In a social media-driven world, guys believe that in order to be more successful with women they need to be overly metrosexual men who care more about their looks than their personality. Take care of your grooming but don't obsess about your looks. Go out there, talk to people. Smile and say hello to a cute girl at the supermarket. Start random conversations. No girls fantasize about meeting the dream guy in a club while half drunk. Maybe he just sparks a conversation with her in the metro on a random Wednesday. Be an interesting guy, stop caring about looking manly. Act, develop inner confidence and charisma. It will be scary, but that's the point.
3. Work Out
I cannot stress enough how important this is for several reasons.
It teaches you discipline. I had moments when I set goals for myself but always failed in being consistent because I didn't see the results. Then when I started running marathons, and later powerlifting, I learned that I will not see results very soon. You have to fall in love with the process itself and detach from the outcome. I used to say that people who practice sports are just mindless pieces of muscle, but once you start practicing physical activities, you learn how much hard work goes behind them and you gain so much respect for people who are active. They are actually some of the smartest people I know.
It becomes a point of reference. Every time I was going through hard times, I would work on my mental strength the same way I would practice physical strength. Muscles grow by basically being hurt. See every challenge as an opportunity to grow and learn no matter how difficult it is. You are not what happens to you but you are how you react to it.
Endorphins. The natural way of relieving stress and surviving days when you feel a bit under the weather.
4. Think
Sounds obvious, right? You would be surprised by how many people don't practice this actively. Most people tend to react to their surroundings. They get lost in the nitty-gritty and don't actually control what they should focus on. A lot of people will tell you that in your 20s you need to do everything. Experiment with this and that.
Living in an "ADD (attention deficit disorder)" world where we are constantly hit with notifications and reasons to be impulsive can lead you in a downward spiral that amounts to nothing in the end. I suggest putting value on THINKING first, then DOING. The people that tell you to do stuff are the people that want to take advantage of your skills so they can do the thinking and you can do the work. 400,000 years ago, none of this existed. It was created by someone's mind gradually. Practice writing 10 ideas per day and go for long walks in the park every Sunday. Become present. Grab control. Have perspective.
5. Manage Your Input/Output Ratio
I used to hate reading. I think I only read one proper book by the time I turned 20. During school, I would always read the online short versions or watch the movies of the books I was supposed to read in literature class. The books in the program just didn't click with me. Then, after finishing school, I still had a huge thirst for knowledge so I started researching topics that I liked and read the most recommended books. And this is how I fell in love with reading and it's something I strive to do daily for at least one hour. Now I always carry my small Kindle with me. Every time I have 10 minutes, I take it out and read another page. At this point, I've lost count at around 200 books and my only worry is that I won't have enough time to read everything. But there's a catch. Reading is input. In order to actually grow as an individual you also have to create a set of actions as output. Don't just read and feel excited that you are becoming so smart. You need to put in practice what you read: Share your "aha" moment from the book with a friend, write a review, start a project. Don't move on to the next read until you apply one lesson from your current one.
You can't create great stuff without learning, but learning without creating stuff is also redundant.
These are just some of the lessons I was lucky enough to experiment so far. I only hope the next five years will be even more challenging.

Each culture has its own constellations, usually based on mythology. This article covers the 88 constellations used in modern astronomy, which properly speaking are not patterns of stars, as in the common use of the word, but areas of the sky. The ancient Babylonians, and later the Greeks (as recorded by Ptolemy), established most of the northern constellations in international use today.

7 Real People Share What ACTUALLY Helped Them Lose Weight

Sometimes getting to your happy weight requires gaining pounds; sometimes it requires losing them. If shedding weight is part of your health plan, you want tried-and-true advice, and it can be hard to sort through the copious amounts of information out there and to figure out what can actually help you on your own journey. With that in mind, we asked seven real people who have lost weight (and kept it off!) what actually helped them see real results. Here’s what they said.
1. Know your body type.
"I have an hourglass figure. When I was younger, I didn't understand this and would often do weight-loss tactics that were harmful to my body to achieve a super-thin look (or simply be disappointed with my lack of progress, and give up way too soon). Once I realized that I'm never going to be super-skinny or have small boobs, it changed everything for me. At most, I can have a toned frame, but that frame will always have curves. This helps me keep my weight-loss expectations and goals realistic and attainable."
—Colette, 38, lost 19 pounds
2. Cut out the booze.
"The biggest factor in my weight loss is cutting out alcohol. Booze and beers already have a high calorie count, but then factor in unhealthy eating from bar food or fast-food hangover cures, and you can see how someone will put on 20 to 30 pounds in a short period. Beyond that, I try to avoid processed carbs and eat as many veggies and fruits as possible."
—Alice, 34, lost 25 pounds
3. Do less cardio.
I used to run a ton, until I worked with a trainer who told me to quit the cardio since it just made me hungry. Instead, switch to weight training—even if you use super-light weights. I did this and immediately began to lose weight, when the pounds had stuck on before. Now, I'm down 18 pounds, and I seldom feel hungry. It's made a huge difference.
—Kevin, 58, lost 18 pounds
4. Do it for how you feel—not how you look.
I've tried to lose weight a ton of times, but when it actually worked, it was because I wanted it for myself and not other people or to look a certain way. I just wanted to feel better, to be happier and healthier. It takes a full-on lifestyle change, with eating healthy and working out but finding that balance to still stay true to yourself and enjoy life. I eat lots of veggies and fruits, whole grains, healthy fats like avocados and cheese, fish, chicken, and I still allow myself two meals a week to eat whatever I want. I also keep 72 percent dark chocolate squares around for sweet cravings.
—Kim, 34, lost 70 pounds
5. Batch cook.
As I got older and older, I started getting heavier and heavier and was faced with the decision of buying new pants or losing weight. The main thing that's made a difference for me is meal prepping since finding a store or restaurant that fits your definition of clean eating is really hard. I'll go to Costco and buy things in bulk, then prepare six-plus meals at a time (this guy has been a godsend for me). I also leaned on vinegars and spices to add a ton of flavor without salt and fat.
—Brian, 31, lost 30 pounds
6. Do your own research.
I took a pretty academic approach and read lots of different articles about nutrition, exercise, weight training, and so on and tried to weed out any pseudoscientific/useless stuff and suss out the common patterns to form my own plan of action. That way, I had a concrete plan that I trusted (I had vetted it, after all!) to follow, which made it much easier to stick to. You can find tons of articles and studies online, and if you go to the original source, you're not getting the influence of everyone trying to spin that information their own way.
—Matt, 42, lost 50 pounds
7. Cut out carbs.
I tried lots of diets in the past, but nothing actually stuck. What really worked for me was a twofold approach—eating right and staying active consistently. I stuck with a low-carb diet—no bread, pizza, noodles, pasta, wraps. The only carbs I ate came from carb-rich vegetables or legumes, like sweet potatoes and lentils. I ate tons of protein, greens, fruit, white meat, and seafood. I also invested in a trainer—working out regularly was key to keeping the ball rolling.
—Sacchin, 34, lost 90 pounds

Diet Myths Examined: Do Carbs Make You Fat?
By Ayana | source: Here May 22nd, 2017
With so many fad diets out there, it can be hard to decide what’s true and what’s a scam. What do you actually need to eat less of? Are fats evil? Are carbs? The answer is that it’s complicated.
My personal motto is “everything in moderation, including moderation,” so I try not to deprive myself of pizza or pasta if I’m craving it. I now know that my body secretes more insulin when I eat meals filled with simple carbohydrates, which in turn makes me more susceptible to weight gain. Yikes.
The worst offenders are pastas, bread and cereal. Also not a good idea if you’re trying to keep a trim waistline: soda, beer and fruit juice. Rice, potatoes and other starches should also be avoided when possible.
Interestingly enough, high-fat diets aren’t as bad as you may assume. One study found that people on the Atkins diet, which restricts carbohydrates but allows protein and fats, were more likely to lose weight and see a decrease in blood pressure.
So the next time you reach for a dinner roll or slice of pizza, it may be wise to think again. While you’re in the business of taking care of your body, make sure you check out our post on simple exercises you can do at home.
